As a roleplayer, I'd answer that question with a resounding "Yes!"

There are rules on a roleplaying server and you should try to follow them. For one, your character must meet roleplaying standards, meaning that it shouldn't contain anything that wouldn't normally be found within the World of Warcraft universe.

Anything that you say in /s, /y, and /p should be In Character (IC), meaning that you're acting as your character would. Try to avoid discussing anything Out of Character (OOC) in those channels. So that means no movie discussion, not using the game's shorthand (LFG, LFM, DPS, and so on), and not what games you're looking forward to play on your XBox 360.

However, most roleplaying servers are just like normal servers due to the fact that Blizzard does not actively enforce the rules. In other words, you can join and break every rule and there's a 99.95% chance that you'll never be reprimanded for your transgression. You can be reported for it, but I think that the community is just tried of complaining and seeing nothing happen, so that's a low possibility. Name violations are probably the things that get corrected most -- but, again, only when people report them.

Despite these setbacks, I do enjoy roleplaying. I have ten characters on Feathermoon US with distinct personalities and backgrounds that I delight in assuming. I run into a handful of other roleplayers (mostly thanks to addons like FlagRSP2 (http://www.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/flag-rsp2.aspx). It think it's fun!

Blogatelle (http://blogatelle.wordpress.com) is an awesome blog that I've recently stumbled across that features a whole lot of roleplaying posts: character creation, stories, backgrounds, histories appearance, and so on. Check them out if you'd like to learn a bit more. I find it absolutely fascinating sometimes.
